Compliance and Sustainability

Compliance

Compliance is a collection of compliance status provided by the material producers in their safety datasheets. The records are categorized in sub-pages:

  • General: Regulatory status for many regulations such as packaging, toys, water-, food-contact, biocompatibility and medical devices.

  • ELVs: Compliance with End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulations.

  • REACH: Compliance with European REACH articles and annexes.

  • RoHS: Compliance with RoHS regulations worldwide.

  • Inventory Lists: Compliance with global chemical inventory requirements.

  • Hazard: Hazard information declared by the producer.

  • Transport: Transport restrictions and classification

  • Conflict Minerals: Conflict minerals declarations supplied by the producer.

  • Right To Know Lists: Chemical-content declarations required by regulations, e.g. California Proposition 65.

More details can be found in the Green Line section of this documentation, Material Compliance Page

Use the filter in each category to find quickly the status you need.

The sources of these data are mostly the safety data sheets (SDS) published by the material producer. Their content and versions are verified regularly by the Total Materia team members to ensure up-to-date information. The details on the last verification and version of the document can be found in the page footer.

Compliance Assessor

Use Compliance Assessor to evaluate the material against selected regulations. The assessment uses the chosen chemical composition.

1

Select the chemical composition

Choose the chemical condition or reference that represents the material to assess. Available references may use different compositions, which can produce different compliance results.

2

Select regulations

Open the Regulation list and select up to five regulations. Search by regulation name or browse regulations by country.

3

Assess the material

Select Assess to generate a status for each regulation and a cumulative material status. Review the substance-level results when a detailed analysis is needed.

Use the assessment results

Add the assessed material to Compliance Assessor to find compliant equivalents or compare it with other materials.

You can also add the results to Report. Create a PDF extract, then add mechanical properties, physical properties, or a sustainability assessment.

Life Cycle Assessment

Use Life Cycle Assessment to compare a material’s cradle-to-gate environmental impacts. Results use a reference quantity of 1 kg of material.

The calculation considers only the production of the raw material based on global averages. A more detailed evaluation can be performed for the Climate Change impact using Carbon Footprint.

1

Select the chemical composition

Choose the chemical condition or reference that represents the material. The selected composition affects the calculated environmental impacts.

2

Select indicators

Choose the assessment method and the environmental indicators to calculate. More than 40 indicators are available.

Select by method or individual midpoint indicators for specific impacts, such as climate change. Select endpoint indicators for broader damage categories, such as human health or ecosystems.

3

Assess the material

Select Assess to calculate the selected indicator values. Review the normalized results, then compare them with other materials where needed.

Use the assessment results

Add the material to Life Cycle Assessment to compare several materials. Rank results, set a benchmark material, or change the visible indicators.

You can also add the results to Report. Create a PDF extract, then add mechanical properties, physical properties, or a compliance assessment.

Carbon Footprint

Use Carbon Footprint to calculate a material’s cradle-to-gate carbon footprint. Results are shown in kg CO₂-eq per kg of material.

Configure the manufacturing, add processing and transport steps to include their carbon impact. This creates a more complete assessment for your selected scenario.

1

Select the chemical composition

Choose the chemical condition or reference that represents the material. The selected composition affects the carbon footprint calculation.

2

Add calculation parameters

Set the manufacturing country or region and manufacturing route. Depending on the route, you can also add the scrap-content percentage.

Optionally add processing and transport parameters. For processing, select the method and country or region. For transport, select the mode and enter the distance in kilometers.

You can add multiple processing and transport parameters.

3

Calculate the footprint

Select Calculate to obtain the footprint. Review the total result and the contribution from manufacturing, processing, and transport.

Without selected parameters, the calculation uses global-average manufacturing data, identical to LCA described above.

Use the assessment results

Add the material to Carbon Footprint to compare scenarios or identify lower-carbon alternatives.

You can also add the footprint contribution chart and table to Report. Create a PDF extract, then add mechanical properties, physical properties, or a compliance assessment.
